This paper represents an attempt to describe the audiovisual text. And unlike written texts, the audiovisual texte comprises several signifying codes, but as far as translation is concerned, only the written code will be tackled in this article. The concept of audiovisual text is defined according to text linguistics, and the parameters of textuality are revisited and applied to the audiovisual text. Also examples, taken from subtitled foreign films into Arabic, are given, for each parameter of textuality, to illustrate the validity of considering audiovisual materials as texts that have to be studied within translation studies. Another aspect illustrated in this paper is the shift from oral speech to written language, within the constraints of time and space, the two major characteristics of subtitling.
