some 200 left-wing opponents demonstrate 24 November 2007 in Perpignan, southwestern France, at the "Wall of the Disappeared", accusing its backers of "organising a selective triage of victims of colonialism. A first ever memorial to commemorate French civilian victims of the war of independence in Algeria was unveiled in southern France 25 November, a day after a demonstration by opponents who say it glorifies colonialism. The "Wall of the Disappeared" was inaugurated on the side of a former prison in Perpignan, a town with strong links to the "pied noir" community of former colonials who fled Algeria at independence in 1962.
